As Provincial Grand Master it gives me great pleasure to share with you details of the 2016 Annual Provincial Grand Lodge Golf Competition.

On Saturday 13 August, 2016 the competition was held at Auchterarder Golf Club.  Sadly due to a number of call offs and no shows, a swift reorganisation of the order of play was required, however after a sharpening off pencils and scratching of heads we commenced play at 12:40. We were fortunate to have ten groups of four golfers teeing off.

The following Daughter Lodges from the Province took part and we thank each and every member of these lodges for coming along and partaking in the competition. The lodges were No. 3, 46, 74, 105, 122, 1123 and 1332.

We were also blessed with the presence of brethren from seven of the sister Provincial Grand Lodges. They were from Aberdeen, Ayrshire, Dunbartonshire, Kilwinning, Lanarkshire Middle Ward, Glasgow and Stirlingshire. We also had the pleasure of welcoming two other Provincial Grand Masters namely Brother Robert Little and Brother Bill Perry. To all our many visitors we thank you very much for coming along and supporting our competition.

I would also like to thank the non-playing brethren who came along, and gave up their time to support this competition, namely Brother’s Russell Logan, Ian Robertson, Alexander Moncreiff and Willie Cunningham.

Following the golf we enjoyed a very welcome meal and liquid refreshments at the club house. After the meal we held the prize giving with the following brethren receiving the trophies. The winning team from Perthshire East were Brother’s Sandy McLeod and Allan Patterson from Lodge St Andrew at Perth No. 74. The runners up were Brother’s Bob Easton and Berkley Harris-Burland from St Johns Lodge No 46. The winning team for the ‘visitors’ competition were Brother Stuart Stirling and Peter Neilson from Stirlingshire. The runners up in this competition were the aforesaid Provincial Grand Masters. Well done Brethren.

There was three competitions within the main one, namely nearest the pin at the 4th and 10th and the longest drive at the 17th. The respective winners were Bob Easton, Ian Rogalski and Allan Patterson.

Unfortunately in every competition there are those amongst us, who by their finishing position are the strongest, as they are holding everyone else up. Therefore in 10th position were Brother’s Terry Stoddart and Jim Watson better luck next year.

Following the prize giving we then proceeded to the raffle, and what a raffle it was. Our thanks go to the many brethren who so generously gave prizes and purchased raffle tickets. As is normal the proceeds of this raffle are placed into the ‘charity pot’ of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Perthshire East and at the end of the season we make our Annual Donations to Charities and Organisations.  I am delighted to inform you that as a result a very handsome sum of £750.00 was raised. We thank everyone for their generosity.

As with everything in life things do not just happen and I am indebted to a number of Provincial Grand Lodge Office Bearers for assisting on the day by collecting monies, selling raffle tickets etc. etc. Brethren, you know who you are and I thank you. We wish to record our thanks to everyone at Auchterarder Golf Club, for the use of the venue and facilities. Also to the caterers for providing such a splendid feast following the golf, it was the usual high standard.

However I have left my biggest thanks to Brother Robert Easton. A number of years ago this competition was in abeyance. Bob got it kick started and has revived it to a very high standard. So much so that we are asked where ever we visit to ‘put my name down for next year’. Therefore as Provincial Grand Master I am grateful to Brother Easton for all the hard work that he does and continues to do.

All that is left for me to say is that I have been informed that next year’s competition will take place on Saturday 12th August, 2017, so please keep that date clear.

A number of photographs [to follow] will be attached showing the golfers preparing for action on the first tee.
